Batteries have been in use for over 200 years and were invented by Alessandro Volta around the year 1800. They are growing ever more popular all the time, in both houses and in industry. In fact the battery industry is growing at around 6% per year and is worth around $50 billion.

They work basically by converting stored chemical energy into electrical energy and come in units that can be used once, or alternatively recharged to be used again. They power all sorts of devices from hearing aids, to telephone exchanges.

The name of battery itself is said to have been coined by Benjamin Franklin after the design of early units reminding him of a battery of guns.

In more detail a battery is made up of numerous voltaic cells. Each one of these cells comes in halves and these connect together through anions and cations which contain conductive electrolytes.

A battery is a device that converts chemical energy directly to electrical energy. It consists of a number of voltaic cells; each voltaic cell consists of two half cells connected in series by a conductive electrolyte containing anions and cations.

There is a redox reaction and it is this that ends up powering the battery. You get reduction (which is actually an addition of electrons) at the cathode and the opposite happens at the anode, where there is addition of electrons, or oxidation as it is called.

Batteries are also grouped into either primary or secondary batteries. Primary ones can provide power straight away, whilst secondary batteries need to be charged first.

They are also split into wet and dry cell batteries. The wet cell has a liquid electrolyte contained in it, whilst the wet cell have an electrolyte that has been immobilized as a paste like substance.

As a general rule the greater the power of the battery the more electrolyte and electrode material the battery will contain.
There are a few environmental concerns with batteries, as there are with many things these days. However, people need to be very careful when they are disposing of their batteries and they should check with the manufacturers instructions for recommendations.

Batteries are also likely to be corrosive and or poisonous if they leak, so people should also be careful to check their batteries, especially if children are playing with battery powered toys.
