Are the chemicals in alkaline batteries harmful to you?

joeya asked:

If so how harmful are they? And how close in contact do you have to get with the chemical for it to harm you?

I was switching the batteries on my calculator and noticed that the old ones leaked all this juice everywhere and I got some on my skin and it burned slightly. After reading that the batteries contained alkaline, I washed my hands in soap and water for a few minutes and I feel alright right now, but I;m still kind of paranoid. Can anyone confirm that they are safe, and if so how safe? Or are they dangerous??

The chemicals involved are corrosive. The recommended first aid is washing your hands in soap and water for a few minutes, so you did exactly the right thing. You should be fine now. If you see irritation or redness where you were burned you might want to see a doctor. If not, be more careful with hose batteries the next time.

not dangerously dangerous…but I wouldnt suggest sitting around and sipping on battery juice either…LOL
if you wash your hands then you diluted the acid and use baking soda to neutralize or coca cola
