New Years Resolutions And Weight Loss - A Displaced Cause?

Have you got a new years weight loss resolution?

The reason so many new years weight loss resolutions fail is that they are often made on account of the external expectation of making them on the new year. As though it were an important ritual of the day, part of the ceremony of the holidays, just like hanging tinsel on the Christmas tree.

To be successful a resolution must be internal. And when new years is as good a day as any to make one, making one simply because it's new years is not. In fact, the tradition may with time have actually hindered people success.

Why? Because as reported by some professionals only 8% of New Year's Resolutions are achieved. (I have no idea how they estimate that, but it rings true somehow.)

The outcome is that we have as a society developed a "Failure Syndrome" around the topic of New Year's resolutions. We anticipate to fail and needless to say, we do.

When I finally quit smoking after more than 100 attempts that did not succeed, my biggest obstacle became overcoming my habit of failure over the smoking habit. I eventually succeeded when I devised a technique aimed at staying quit a specified period of time and then allowing myself to smoke again, once I hit that limit. That took away, my feel like I was going to fail anyway so I may as well have a cigarette now and get it over with.

At present I don't know if that will work for anyone else, but it did for me.

The actual key to setting a new years resolution weight loss, is not to concentrate on losing weight.

We need to think about resolutions not as wishes or even goals.

We should wish we were thinner and healthier. We may want to be x pounds, or even x pounds by a specific date. But the real solution is not about what we want. It's about how we are going to make it happen.

A resolution is not a "Want to," it's a "How To." Exactly what are we going to do to achieve the desired effects?

So it may be vital to think about the steps to making a resolution for a moment.

First, we must come to a realization that something should change in our lives. The key again is the first person, "we" meaning YOU.

Next, having accepted the need to make something take place, We (you) need to calculate what you will actually need to do to achieve that something. The apparent you are on this "Plan" the better, but even a sketchy plan, if realistic and believable to the sole person that matters is okay. (By the way, that's you again.)

Finally, the critical step is that you actually decide to do it. This is certainly a decision - not a wish.

The resolution once made is delicate, like a newborn infant and needs nurture and care. Initially your own will power and commitment may be enough to sustain it and take you off to a start.

Your initial success can serve to encourage you to continue, but you need to see that success. And that indicates you need to monitor your progress. If you cannot measure it, it will be difficult to use that success to sustain the enthusiasm and commitment.

I hope you got the essence of this message, which is to understand that a resolution is not a wish, but a plan.

I encourage you to think about your plan and the way you will sustain it in the face of inevitable occasional failure. Persistence is the key. Go for it.
