How do I know if my laptop battery is bad, or if the laptop battery charger is bad?

TBC asked:

I have a Dell Latitude C640 that has worked quite well for some time. Recently, the battery has stopped charging. Is there a way, without buying a new battery or charger first, to know if its that battery that is bad, or the charging system is bad. I previously had a dell d600 with a similar problem and it turned out that the battery was fine, while the internal connection where the adapter plugs into back of the laptop went bad.

Take the battery out and see if your computer will just run on the power cord!!

If it does than more than likely it is your battery if it doesn’t hold a charge!!

Use a multimeter on the cord. if it’s not the cord, then pull the battery out and test that with the multimeter, if its not that, then your AC jack needs to be resoldered/replaced. You can do it yourself for 6 bucks (and 2-3 hours of time) or pay someone 100 bucks to fix it

Turn on your laptop while it is connected and look on your bottom right hand corner at your icons… one of them will be some kind of icon regarding the power to your battery. See what it says (it can either say it is on battery, or charging the battery, or that it is on AC power). That should at least tell you what the laptop detects, which may say what is working or not.

Also, try to feel your adapter after it has been plugged onto your laptop for a while (the laptop should be off) and see if it is warm. If is is warm to the touch, it means that at least there is an electrical current going through it, which might mean that it is working properly.

The battery should never just stop charging. It would slowly diminish power over time.

If you plug in the charging cord and the charging light comes on then there is something between the interface and the battery. Take it to a computer store to fix it.
Seeing how you had the problem before, this is probably the answer.

If you plug in the cord and no light comes on then you need a new cord.
