How long can re-chargeable batteries remain dormant before they can no longer hold a charge ?

How long before it’s too late, and even if I do get my wiring connected properly so I can charge it, it still won’t hold a charge.
A set of 4 batteries cost about $100, so I don’t want that to happen.

Lead sulphur batteries? Fully discharged? I wouldn’t want to leave them in that state for more than a couple weeks. I doubt they’d be permanently damaged in that time, but they would be subject to lower reliability. Subjecting discharged batteries to temperature extremes does worsen the situation. Such as dead batteries in the middle of winter when the temp is below freezing.
