How long can you store batteries?

Matthew T asked:

I just found a few 6 volt batteries in a corner of the garage. Should I hold onto them or recycle them? They seem to work fine now, but have probably been in the garage for 3-4 years. I use them for a flashlight during power outages. Should I count on them to work like new batteries or replace them?

Buy a new set and put them in the freezer. That way if the set that seems to be working fine goes out you are sure to have a good set.
