Lithium Ion battery has hissing sound?

Zipfly asked:

Any electronics experts able to tell me what is going on? My Sanyo USB battery booster (DC output 5v at 500 mAh) has a hissing sound when I plug some USB rechargeable devices into it. Only the very lowest USB led lights don’t make any sound. Is there some chemical reaction going on when it draws too much power? I don’t know how these lithium ion things work. Thanks.

Stop using it. Take it back to where you purchased it. It should not be making a noise.

It’s normal. Not sure where the noise is coming from, but it’s probably just cheap components. My Philips USB car charger does the same thing REALLY LOUD, and neither my car, nor my iPhone have blown up yet the entire year I had that charger. It may be annoying, but it’s normal. Exchange it if it bothers you tho.

that is the warning sound you need just before the battery explodes…

Li-Ion batteries DO NOT make a noise, if they do, that is hydrogen gas escaping via a broken seal.

TAKE IT BACK where you bought it.

    DO NOT USE IT…

    They can catch fire.

It is likely a switch-mode converter that converts the 3.6v from the battery to USB 5V.
It is not uncommon for them to make a noise, especially when loaded.
