A standard alkaline battery does not need to be recycled. It can be safely disposed of in normal garbage. There are no toxic materials in an alkaline battery and I am unaware of any recycling for them. Lithium batteries are the same, no toxics. Mercury batteries and NiCad need to be recycled. Mercury batteries aren’t made any more. If you have some, they must be fairly old. Most refuse disposal sites have facilities for disposing of toxic materials on a small, house-hold amount basis.

Check your local and/or state laws in regards to this. In California, it is now illegal to dispose any batteries with household trash. You would need to dispose of them through your local hazardous waste facility. It’s a hassle, but it’s free and better for the environment.
