Where is my voltage regulator?

daniel h asked:

I have a 1988 3/4 ton dodge van it has a 5.2L V8. I just had my alternator rebuilt. I have a fairly new optima battery, and my battery/alternator tester says that it is good. but I’m not receving the power from the alternator. If someone could let me know where my vlotage regulator is or any other info on what might be wrong,
thank you
Dan

Somewhere on the wall…Look for a small blue box…

    I don’t drive nor am I a mechanic.

It more sounds like the wiring going from the alternator to the battery is faulty. Whether the wiring is thin or it does not have proper connections, either could cause the problematic charging of the battery.

You should also take a good look at all of the grounding connections of your battery. There is some kind of power distribution problem, but there isn’t any kind of voltage regulator.

The regulators in most of the vehicles of that age are in the alternator. Check the wires to the starter relay, solenoid, and battery. If that hasn’t fixed it, pull the alternator back off, and get it tested at the local auto- parts store. Most of them will test it for free. After that, pull of the starter and have it tested. The auto- parts store can check that too, probably for free.
