WHY do rechargeable batteries deteriorate over time?

I know that rechargeable batteries (even Lithium Ion) lose some of their capacity over time. But WHY does that happen?

    It’s simple……so they can sell you new ones.

    Thats the way there made. they can,t have batterys running forever the makers won,t make any money that way.

    all batteries must die one day, its the circle of life. life is given – and life is taken away. that is why it is important for each battery to live a full life…. a life full of adventure and happiness. some batteries arent given the opportunity at a full life, so make sure you treat yours with the respect it deserves
